Development of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health and Medical WORKFORCE PLAN
In August 2018, the Council of Australian Governments’ Health Council (CHC), consisting of all Health Ministers across Australia, committed to the development of a National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health and Medical Workforce Plan. The CHC recognises that developing an appropriately skilled, available, and responsive health workforce is critical to an effective health system and achieving better health outcomes for all.
The Workforce Plan will focus on attracting, training and retaining Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the health workforce across Australia. It will also be used to supplement the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workforce Strategic Framework 2016-2023, with a focus on implementation.
The Commonwealth Department of Health is leading the development of the Workforce Plan and has engaged Cultural Fusion to progress this work.
To maximise stakeholder involvement, the Commonwealth has established a Project Reference Group on behalf of the Australian Health Ministers' Advisory Council, to oversee and guide the Workforce Plan’s development. The Project Reference Group includes representatives from the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Standing Committee; National Health Leadership Forum; National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation; National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Worker Association; state and territory governments (where nominated) and the Commonwealth Department of Health.
Cultural Fusion will be undertaking an extensive national consultation process, through a variety of methods, and will be inviting a broad section of stakeholders to participate in one on one interviews or consultation workshops. These consultations will run from October 2019 through to February 2020.
Participants may also be asked to share any policy, data or evaluation documents, which are relevant to the project, including numbers of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people employed over the past five years. Provision of this information is at your discretion.
Cultural Fusion will respect your organisation’s intellectual property rights. All information provided will be kept strictly confidential and used for the sole purpose of developing the Workforce Plan.
